Search for AI search statistics for India and you will find the same handful of numbers quoted with total confidence and very little context. Sixty per cent of Indians search with AI. Eighty-nine per cent use AI assistants. A hundred million AI Mode users. Some of these are accurate, some are real numbers used for the wrong thing, and at least one has quietly changed as it spread.
I went back to the primary sources for every India-specific figure I could find: YouGov’s 2026 India survey, Statcounter’s referral data, Google’s own India announcements, OpenAI’s user figures and the Airtel and Perplexity deal. Only 27% of Indian AI search users start their searches with AI, even though 89% of urban online searchers use AI assistants in some way. (Social Samosa (YouGov data), 2026). That gap between using AI and starting with AI is the most useful thing an Indian SEO learner can understand right now, and it runs through every section below.
1 How Many Indians Use AI to Search? It Depends on the Question
Between a quarter and nine in ten, depending on what is measured. In YouGov’s 2026 survey of urban Indians, 57% used AI assistants in the past thirty days, 60% start at least one search a day with AI, and 89% use AI in some way. Only 27% of AI users start their searches there. (Social Samosa, 2026)
| METRIC | VALUE | SOURCE |
|---|---|---|
| Used search engines in the past thirty days | 65% | BusinessToday |
| Used AI assistants or chatbots in the past thirty days | 57% | BusinessToday |
| Start at least one search a day with AI | 60% | Social Samosa |
| Use AI in some capacity to find information | 89% | Social Samosa |
| AI is their primary starting point | 27% | Social Samosa |
| Use AI only after search engines or other platforms | 36% | Campaign India |
| Use AI alongside other sources | 26% | Campaign India |
These figures all come from one survey of 1,004 adults, fielded between April and May 2026 and representative of urban India. They are not contradicting each other. They answer different questions, and the headline you pick changes the story you tell a client.
For SEO work, the most important numbers are the last three in the table. More people use AI after a search engine than before one, and a large group uses both side by side. YouGov also found 44% of AI users rely on it to verify information they found elsewhere. That is a checking behaviour, and it means your pages need to hold up when an AI assistant compares them with other sources.
Two cautions. The survey covers urban adults, so it says nothing about rural or non-internet users. And YouGov’s full report is gated, so these figures come from coverage in Indian business media that quoted it. If you cite them in client work, link the coverage and name YouGov as the original source.
Adobe’s separate survey, published in November 2025, measured something different again: 33% of Indian consumers already use agentic AI and 44% expect to within a year. Different survey, different definition, so it should never be merged with YouGov’s figures.
2 Which AI Chatbots Send Traffic to Indian Websites?
ChatGPT sends most of it. Statcounter’s August 2026 data puts ChatGPT at 78.72% of AI chatbot referrals to Indian websites, followed by Google Gemini at 12.68%, Perplexity at 3.59%, Claude at 3.13% and Microsoft Copilot at 1.88%. (Statcounter, 2026)
| CHATBOT (INDIA, AUGUST 2026) | REFERRAL SHARE | SOURCE |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 78.72% | Statcounter |
| Google Gemini | 12.68% | Statcounter |
| Perplexity | 3.59% | Statcounter |
| Claude | 3.13% | Statcounter |
| Microsoft Copilot | 1.88% | Statcounter |
This is the dataset I would put in front of any Indian client asking where to focus. Statcounter measures actual visits that AI chatbots send to websites running its tracker, so it reflects traffic you can see in analytics rather than how many people open an app.
Compared with the worldwide figures for the same month, India leans more towards Google. Gemini holds 12.68% in India against 10.9% worldwide, and Claude holds 3.13% against 2.57%. ChatGPT is almost identical, at 78.72% in India and 79.4% worldwide. Perplexity and Copilot both sit lower in India than globally.
The practical takeaway is simple: in India, ChatGPT and Gemini together account for over nine in ten AI chatbot referrals. Getting cited there starts with the basics covered in my evidence-graded guide to technical SEO for AI citations. The main one is making sure AI crawlers can read your HTML at all.
If you want to check this against your own site, open GA4 and filter sessions by source for chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai. For most Indian sites the numbers will be small, but the mix across platforms tells you whether your audience follows the national pattern.
One limit to keep in view: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode do not appear in these figures, because they live inside Google Search. Clicks from them show up as ordinary Google organic traffic.
3 How Big Is ChatGPT in India?
Very big. OpenAI’s CEO said in February 2026 that India has 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, making it OpenAI’s biggest market outside the US. India also has the largest number of student ChatGPT users of any country. (TechCrunch, 2026)
| METRIC | VALUE | SOURCE |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly active ChatGPT users in India | 100 million | TechCrunch |
| Weekly active ChatGPT users worldwide (October 2025) | 800 million | TechCrunch |
| ChatGPT app downloads in India, April to June 2025 | 46.7 million | TechCrunch (Sensor Tower data) |
| ChatGPT monthly active app users in India, April to June 2025 | 19.8 million | TechCrunch (Sensor Tower data) |
Be careful when mixing these rows. The weekly figure comes from OpenAI and counts everyone using ChatGPT in a week across web and apps. The app figures come from Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch, cover only mobile apps and are a year older. They measure different things, so the gap between them is not a sign that either is wrong.
For Indian SEO learners, the student detail matters as much as the headline. A very large share of ChatGPT use in India is learning and research, which is exactly where clear, well-sourced explanatory content gets cited.
What this means in practice: when an Indian student, shopper or professional asks ChatGPT a question in your niche, the answer it gives is shaped by pages it can find and trust. If your competitors publish clear, specific, well-sourced answers and you publish thin service pages, the scale of Indian ChatGPT use works against you rather than for you.
4 What Has Google Released for AI Search in India?
A lot, and fast. AI Mode launched in India in June 2025, added Hindi in September 2025 and seven more Indian languages in October 2025. Google says early AI Mode queries run 2-3x the length of traditional searches. (Google, 2025)
| METRIC | VALUE | SOURCE |
|---|---|---|
| AI Mode monthly users, US and India combined | 100 million | |
| AI Mode query length versus traditional searches | 2-3x | |
| Usage increase for query types showing AI Overviews (US and India) | 10% | |
| New Indian languages added to AI Mode, October 2025 | 7 |
Google has also said that people in India are power users of multimodal search, forming its largest user base for voice and visual search anywhere in the world. Put that together with longer AI Mode queries and nine supported languages, and the picture for Indian SEO is clear: content that answers full, spoken-style questions, including in Hindi and regional languages, has room that English-only keyword pages do not.
For Indian businesses, the language expansion is the part most competitors are ignoring. Many Indian sites still publish only in English, even when their customers search in Hindi, Marathi or Tamil. AI Mode can now answer in those languages, and it needs pages to draw from. A regional-language FAQ or service page is a cheap test that most of your competitors have not run.
What Google has not published is how often AI Overviews appear on Indian searches, or how many Indians use AI Mode on their own. Any figure you see for either should be treated as an estimate unless it names its method. If you want to understand how AI Mode differs from the regular results page in practice, my comparison of Google AI Mode vs Google Search covers it.
5 Is Perplexity Growing in India?
In downloads, yes. In referrals, less than you would expect. Airtel offered 360 million customers a free year of Perplexity Pro in July 2025, and Perplexity’s Indian downloads reached 2.8 million that quarter. Its share of AI chatbot referrals in India is still just 3.59%. (Airtel, 2025)
| METRIC | VALUE | SOURCE |
|---|---|---|
| Airtel customers offered free Perplexity Pro | 360 million | Airtel |
| Annual Pro price waived | INR 17,000 | Airtel |
| Perplexity app downloads in India, April to June 2025 | 2.8 million | TechCrunch (Sensor Tower data) |
| Perplexity monthly active app users in India, April to June 2025 | 3.7 million | TechCrunch (Sensor Tower data) |
| Perplexity share of AI chatbot referrals, India, August 2026 | 3.59% | Statcounter |
| Perplexity share of AI chatbot referrals, worldwide, August 2026 | 4.31% | Statcounter |
This is the most surprising pattern in the India data. A free premium offer to an enormous customer base did not turn Perplexity into a major traffic source for Indian websites. Its referral share in India sits below its worldwide share.
There are a few possible reasons, and none has been tested publicly. Free subscriptions do not always become daily habits, and people may use Perplexity for quick answers without clicking through. The lesson for SEO learners is broader than Perplexity: a platform’s user numbers and the traffic it sends you are not the same thing. Check your own analytics before you rebuild a strategy around a headline.
6 Which India AI Search Numbers Should You Not Quote?
Three patterns cause most of the errors: quoting a combined US and India figure as India-only, mixing different YouGov measures, and repeating numbers that have drifted from their source. One Indian agency blog says Indian AI queries are 2-5x (commonly cited; no primary source traceable) longer, but Google’s own figure is 2-3x. (Webomindapps, 2025)
| CLAIM AS OFTEN QUOTED | VALUE | SOURCE |
|---|---|---|
| Indian AI queries are longer than desktop inputs by | 2-5x (commonly cited; no primary source traceable) | Webomindapps |
| AI Mode users (quoted as India-only) | 100 million | |
| Indians who use AI to search (quoted without its definition) | 89% | Social Samosa |
None of these is a scandal. They are ordinary copying errors, and they matter because Indian businesses make budget decisions on them. When a proposal says a hundred million Indians use AI Mode, the client is being sold a number Google never gave.
Two sources to watch. YouGov’s full India report is available on request, and Fabulous Media has announced a State of AI Search in India report that had not been released when this page was written. If either publishes new India figures, this page will be updated.
The test I use before quoting any India AI number is the same one I apply to global data: can you name the organisation, the sample and the date, and open the page where the figure lives? It is the habit behind my Hybrid Engine Optimisation approach, and it keeps client recommendations honest.

Methodology
I collected every India-specific AI search figure I could find from primary sources and opened each source on the research date. YouGov’s India report is gated, so its figures come from Indian business media coverage that quoted it directly. Statcounter figures are August 2026 monthly data. Source verification was done by opening each page manually, and the charts were drawn locally from the data.
- Sources consulted: 38
- Sources cited: 14
- Data freshness: current year: 6, last year: 8, older: 0
- Data range: 2025-06-24 to 2026-09-30
- Research date: 2026-09-30
- Update schedule: Quarterly
- Limitations: YouGov’s full report is gated, so its figures come from press coverage by Indian business media. Statcounter measures referrals to websites running its tracker, not total usage. No public study measures how often AI Overviews appear on Indian queries.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people in India use ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s CEO said in February 2026 that India has 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, its biggest market outside the US. India also has the largest number of student ChatGPT users of any country. (TechCrunch, 2026)
What percentage of Indians use AI to search?
It depends on the question asked. In YouGov’s 2026 survey of urban Indians, 57% used AI assistants in the past 30 days, 60% start at least one search a day with AI, and 89% use AI in some capacity. Only 27% of AI users treat AI as their primary starting point. (Social Samosa (YouGov data), 2026)
Which AI chatbot sends the most traffic to Indian websites?
ChatGPT, by a wide margin. Statcounter’s August 2026 data puts ChatGPT at 78.72% of AI chatbot referrals in India, followed by Google Gemini at 12.68%, Perplexity at 3.59%, Claude at 3.13% and Microsoft Copilot at 1.88%. (Statcounter, 2026)
Is Google AI Mode available in Hindi and other Indian languages?
Yes. AI Mode launched in India in English in June 2025, added Hindi in September 2025, and added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu in October 2025. (Google, 2025)
Does Google publish how many Indians use AI Mode?
Not separately. Google’s 100 million monthly active users figure from July 2025 covers the US and India combined, so it cannot be quoted as an India-only number. (Google, 2025)
